Storms around the Dunstable Lifeboat

My absence here of late is because I've been swallowing a lot of water and nearly drowning in my mate Mandy's Lifeboats blog (link above in PPlog PPurpose).

It's all about the Mental Health National Service User Network (NSUN) who have got their basic website off the ground and have taken a right hammering (very unfair and OTT in my eyes) by some service user friends. My own take on NSUN, having been there from the outset, is that it is a very worthwhile effort by some very good people who certainly don't deserve to be pilloried in this way.

Anyway I'm not going to repeat it all here but have a look at it in detail on Mandy's site and let me know what you think.

Sorry that you swallowed alot of water Mike.

I have swallowed gallons of the stuff in my time and sure to swallow loads more.

If someone is being honest, they have to roll with the punches..because they will come.

And okay so my view on things NSUN is different to yours but that doesn't stop me being your mate. Another mate, one who has been a rock for me, is on the NSUN Management Committee. My opinion of them hasn't changed because they are involved in something I am sceptical about.

I can disagree with people whilst valuing them and their friendship. I can't, however, value and be friends with people whom I think are doing a dis-service to mentally ill people.

Anyway, hope you had a relaxing Crimbo and 2008 is a good year for you.

The DLA and Workfare Scandals.

This ConDem Coalition is exploiting the apparent helplessness of disabled people by taking essential money away from them and forcing vulnerable people, for example, people with mental health difficulties. I remember, when I was a practising social worker, the horror experienced by service users when they received a letter summoning them to undergo a medical examination (25 miles away in Norwich). Some became absolutely terrified at the prospect and the stress of having to get to and face the appointment led to one or two relapses and hospital admissions. Against local authority policy, I always took them to the appointment, went in with them and supported them through the interview acting as advocate. The doctors at these reviews were employed by the Benefits Agency and usually retired from practice. They were also usually empathic with the service user and mostly helped to reduce the terror of the interview. The new 'Workfare' reviews which every DLA claimant will have to und...
